Hampden 16s 17J, circa 1902
Model 4, "Gen'l Stark"
Lever Set, Stem Wind
Chrome Plated Screw Back and Bezel
Case
Dial: This original
single sunk roman numeral dial is signed HAMPDEN WATCH CO. It
is also marked CANTON, OHIO above the seconds bit. The dial is
in near perfect shape, with just a couple of very light hair line
cracks near the 7 hour mark, as seen in the photos! The blue light
spade hands are in good condition as well.
Movement: This nickel
damaskeened movement is marked GEN'L STARK. General Stark was more
than just a famous general during the American Revolution. He also
coined the phrase "Live Free Or Die!" now his home state
of New Hampshire's motto. (Click
on this link for a bio of General John Stark.) There is some
wear to the movement from being cleaned over its decades of service.
There are also some finger prints that are hard to spot that are
etched into the movement. These aesthetic blemishes DO NOT affect
the performance or timekeeping. It also features screw down jewel
settings, 17 jewels, an expansion balance, a Breguet hair spring,
and a patent micro regulator. This well running watch has been professionally
cleaned and oiled, and is keeping excellent time!
Case: The chrome
plated screw back and bezel case is marked DEFIANCE on the inside
of the back lid. There is moderate wear, especially on the back
cover, from normal use. The threads on the bezel and back cover
are a bit worn but the cover and lid still thread on and off properly.
The crown is in good shape and winds and sets the watch properly.
The original bow is nice and snug.
Crystal: The
clear glass crystal is in great shape with little signs of use.
