Elgin 18s 15J, circa 1873
Model 2, Grade 20
(Unusual) Lever Set, Stem Wind/Transitional
Triple Hinged Coin Silver Case
Dial: This original
single sunk Roman numeral dial is signed ELGIN NAT'L WATCH CO. Although
there are some minor edge chips visible upon very close inspection,
these are hidden by the bezel. This dial is in excellent condition
and shows very well! The cobalt blue spade hands are in excellent
condition as well!
Movement: The
gilded transitional movement is nice and shiny still (which is very
uncommon after 120+ years of service). It has a very early and unusual
lever setting, the lever needs to be held to the right in order
to set the hands. Later, Elgin used the standard lever setting that
is seen on most rail road watches. It also has a square main spring
arbor and can be wound with a key (not included, as it is stem wind
as well). This was one of the higher grade movements when it was
produced, featuring an expansion balance and 15 jewels in screw
down settings! It has been professionally cleaned and oiled and
is keeping good time!
Case: The triple
hinged coin silver case is marked FAHY'S MONARCH COIN. I believe
this is a 3 ounce case. The case is in nice shape, with minor pocket
wear and a few small dings hear and there due to normal use. The
back cover is ever so slightly bent, and is not completely flush
when closed (see picture below). Other than that, the case is in
perfect mechanical condition, with lids and hinges working as they
should. There are some spots that can be polished out by the new
owner, should the new owner desire. There is a lot of life left
on the bow and crown.
Crystal: Nice
clear glass crystal looks in nearly new condition!
